What Is a Lead Magnet (Freebie)? 

A lead magnet, also known as a freebie or an opt-in, is a valuable piece of content that you give your target audience in exchange for their email address. Your freebie can be a guide, a checklist, a webinar, or any other piece of content that solves a specific problem for your target audience. 

A high-quality freebie helps you build trust with your audience and grows your email list. Ultimately, this leads to more people wanting to work with you or buy your products!

You can use Flodesk to create different workflows. A workflow is a sequence of automated actions triggered by a certain event, such as downloading your freebie.

1. Log Into Your Flodesk Account

The very first thing you need to do is log into your Flodesk account. If you don’t have a Flodesk account yet, you can use my referral link to get 50% off your first year

Once you’re in your Flodesk account, go into Workflows

The first step to delivering a freebie with Flodesk is to go to your account and select "Workflows."



To continue with the next steps, you should already have your audience segments created and your landing page set up. If you don’t have your segments and landing page created, watch this video before creating your new workflow. 

2. Start a New Workflow

Once you’re in Workflows, click on the New Workflow button in the top right corner of your screen. This action is going to take you to your workflow template gallery. 

3. Select the “Lead Magnet Delivery” Template

Flodesk already has some pre-made workflow templates for you to choose from. For this tutorial, select the Lead Magnet Delivery template from the gallery. Then, Customize it. 

To deliver a freebie with Flodesk, you need to choose from one of the workflow templates.

4. Choose Your Segment

Once you start customizing your Lead Magnet Delivery template, you’ll see a workflow tree with pre-made steps. The tree visually outlines the steps of the workflow process. 

Typically, the Lead Magnet Delivery steps go something like this: 

  1. The lead enters their email address
  2. The lead receives an email to access the freebie 
  3. The lead goes into a nurture/sales email sequence OR the workflow ends. 

The first step to customizing your Lead Magnet Delivery workflow is to choose your segment. If you don’t have your audience segments set up yet, watch this video

To choose your segment, click on Add Trigger and choose the segment associated with your freebie.

5. Customize Your Lead Magnet Delivery Email

Let’s customize your Lead Magnet Delivery Email! This is the email that your leads are going to receive once they input their email address to download your freebie. 

Flodesk is a very intuitive platform. Style your email, add your copy, update your branding…basically, make it look and sound like you! If you want additional help with branding your emails, watch this tutorial

Always check the mobile version! Many of your new subscribers will read this email on their phones, so it’s really important to make sure that everything looks great on mobile.

6. Add Your Freebie to Your Delivery Email 

Don’t skip over the most important step! Your leads need to be able to download the freebie that they signed up for. Add a button, go to Link on the right-hand navigation, and attach the PDF freebie to the button (or add a link, if that makes more sense).

7. Add Additional Workflow Steps

You can end the workflow with the Lead Magnet Delivery Email, but you can also create additional steps. For example, you may want to send more nurturing or sales emails to your new subscribers, welcoming them to your community or showcasing a product. 

Simply click on the + sign and add a Time Delay, a new Email, or other steps that make sense for your workflow! 

You can add additional steps to your Flodesk workflow.

8. Publish Your Workflow

Once you’re happy with your workflow, it’s time to hit Publish! This will activate your workflow and get you on your way to collecting new email subscribers 😊

Don’t forget to test your workflow! Go through the landing page with another email address and make sure that you’re able to get the Lead Magnet Delivery email and download the freebie.
